For the past decade, the US Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) has offered financial support to implement radon projects through a
federal grant called the State Indoor Radon Grant (SIRG).
North Carolina Radiation Protection (NCRPS), a section in the
Division of Environmental Health of the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources, has received funding from this grant since 1990. We
re-distribute this grant to government related organizations to implement a
variety of radon programs throughout North Carolina. Past organizations
includes: the Cooperate Extension Service of NCSU, Applied Research Program
of NCSU, the Environmental Science and Engineering Department of UNC– Chapel
Hill, NC geology survey, NC Division of Water Quality, NC Division of
Epidemiology and several North Carolina county environmental health
departments (Guilford, Forsyth and Yadkin)
This coming year, we have the Environmental Health
Department of Guilford County and Wake County to implement outreach and
radon measurement projects.
Some activities supported and/or sponsored by this grant
include:
-
Basic radon research surveys such as: state radon in air
survey; radon in water survey; and radon behavior study in ground water.
-
Radon outreach programs such as, distribution of radon
detectors to citizens to test their homes for radon.
-
Sponsor meetings in radon education,
-
Sponsor training workshops on radon measurement,
mitigation, and radon resistant new home construction techniques.
-
Assist in radon measurement in schools.
If you are state or local government related, or a
non-profit organization and wish to know more about applying for this grant,
